How to Budget When You're Broke: A Simple Plan That Works

When money is tight, budgeting might feel impossible. But it’s exactly when you need a plan the most. This post is for anyone who’s broke, overwhelmed, and trying to take control—starting right now.

Step 1: Triage Your Bills
Make a list of the absolute must-pay expenses. This includes:

  • Rent or mortgage
  • Electricity/water
  • Basic food
  • Transportation (only if needed to keep a job)

Everything else can be addressed later—prioritize survival.

Step 2: Track Every Dollar
You don’t need a fancy app. A notebook, printable tracker, or free spreadsheet works. Know where every dollar is going.

Step 3: Cut Without Guilt
If you’re broke, forget about “fun money” or takeout for now. This isn’t forever—it’s for survival.

Step 4: Look for Help
You’re not alone. From food banks to free medical clinics, there are resources out there. I’ll be posting more soon.
